Have you got a good idea of which town or village you’d like to move to or are you till deciding? If it’s the latter you may want to check out the Muddy Stilettos ‘Best Places to Live’ list for 2023 to find out the best place for you.
Every year the women’s lifestyle website creates a list of the best places to live in the UK, voted for by their website users. This week the details of the Dorset entrants have been ranked and next week they will reveal the overall national winner.
So, where are the top the top ten places to live in Dorset? Top of the list this year was the town of Sherborne.
What’s it like to live in Sherborne?
Sherborne is a picturesque market town in North West Dorset, situated close to the Somerset border and six miles from the Somerset town of Yeovil. The local area is steeped in history and it is home to many fabulous historic architecture, with 378 listed buildings situated in the town which has a population of less than 10,000 people.
Sherborne is close to both the Fleet Air Arm Museum in Yeovil and the Haynes International Motor Museum in Sparkford. There is also has a beautiful Abbey, and two castles, one of which was built by Sir Walter Raleigh. It is a great destination for shopping too with many independently-owned artisan stores and boutiques.
The transport links here are great. The town is served by its own train station which can take you directly to London Waterloo in just over 2 hours – or westward to Exeter St Davids in just over an hour. It is also close to the A30 and A303, which can get you to London by car in less than 3 hours.
Muddy Stilettos describes Sherborne as a “picture postcard market town in north west Dorset has gorgeous medieval and Georgian properties, an eclectic array of independent shops, cafes and restaurants, excellent schools, a magnificent abbey and not one but two castles.”
The top ten places to live in Dorset
So who else made the cut? Western Dorset did particularly well on the list. Our home town of Bridport came fourth in the competition and another local favourite, Lyme Regis, ranked third. Here’s that Muddy Stilettos list in full:
- Lyme Regis
- Canford Cliffs
Another popular location for those relocating or retiring to the South West, Bournemouth did not make the cut this year but the nearby areas nearby of Southbourne (seventh) and Canford Cliffs (ninth) did so you might want to check out those areas if you’re thinking of moving to the Dorset Coast. Our county town of Dorchester is another great place to live and ranked sixth on the chart this year. We’d recommend checking out all of these towns and finding out which one is best suited for you. For example you might really like the look of Lyme Regis but you might not enjoy the huge influx of visitors in the summer.
