Getting around in Beaminster

The nearest railway station to Beaminster is located 5 miles away in Crewkerne and the M5 motorway is around an hours drive away. But this is probaby a good thing – as because of it’s slightly out-of-the way location, Beaminster has remained relatively unspoiled and is less ‘touristy’ than some areas of Dorset. It is unpretentious with an interesting mix of architecture from rustic cottages to Georgian properties and the local hills are dotted with ancient trackways and burial mounds, suggesting that it has been a popular place to live for at least 3,000 years.

Beaminster in Arts and Literature

The town features a mixed-bag of artistic and literary connections. It was the boyhood home of author and arctic explorer Samuel Hearne, believed to be the inspiration for Samuel Taylor Coleridge’s ‘The Rime of the Ancient Mariner’. Actor and horse-enthusiast Martin Clunes adopted Beaminster as his home and indie songstress PJ Harvey grew up nearby and went to school here too.

Beaminster also inspired Dorset author Thomas Hardy’s ‘fictional ‘Emminster’ in his classic work, Tess of the D’Urbervilles. In 1929 an actress from Beaminster – Gerturde Bugler – played Tess on stage in London having been personally cast by Hardy in the role.
