Crewkerne is a charming South Somerset town, fairly close to the coast, 7 miles east of Chard and 9 miles south west of Yeovil. It’s also just 12 miles away from our business HQ here in Bridport which is why if you are moving into the area and need removals or storage in Crewkerne, most people come to us, as a trusted independent removals company, to get the job done efficiently!

Since the covid lockdowns more people are re-evaluating where they live and work and what their priorities are, which has subsequently seen a surge of interest in rural properties from those wishing to move to the country. As a result of this house prices in Devon and Cornwall have shot up and there isn’t as much available to buy, so now people are looking in less obvious places, like South Somerset to find a suitable countryside home.

Transport links to Crewkerne

For commuters, the travel links to Crewkerne are pretty good. The train station is situated on the main line to London and you can travel to Waterloo in just two and a half hours. The A30 runs through the town linking it by road to Exeter (less than an hour away) and London via the A303 in under 3 hours.

If you’re relocating with children, then there are some really great schools both in Crewkerne and the surrounding villages of West Chinnock and Haselbury Plucknett. If you’re looking for things to do with kids nearby, check out Crewkerne Museum,  the Octagon Theatre in Yeovil, the Fleet Air Arm Museum in Yeovilton and several family-friendly National trust houses including Barrington Court and Montacute House. It’s also pretty close to the Dorset coast where Bridport, West Bay and Lyme Regis are well worth a visit.

The local amenities here are good. The town centre is host to a variety of pubs, cafes and restaurants, several supermarkets along with independent boutique and artisan shops and a swimming pool with a gym.

Crewkerne has a hell of a lot going for it but until recently it has been overlooked by many people looking to relocate to the West. It is not renowned for specific industries (unlike Axminster and its carpets) but it does lay claim to one of the world’s smallest car companies. Ariel – producers of the Ariel Atom – has just seven employees, making around 100 cars per year.

Why is it called Crewkerne?

The name Crewkerne comes from the words ‘cruc’ meaning hill and ‘earn’ meaning  storehouse. There has been a settlement here in the South Somerset hills since Saxon times and coins that were minted in Crewkerne during the reign of King Ethelred the Unready (978 – 1016) have been discovered nearby. The surrounding countryside has lots of lovely hiking routes, footpaths and bridleways and the town centre is a designated conservation area, featuring honey-coloured stone buildings built with stone quarried at nearby Ham Hill.
