Are you planning a move to Axminster? This pretty market town is situated on the river Axe on the Eastern border of Devon,  7 miles from the stunning Jurassic Coastline of Lyme Regis in Dorset. Recently the town has been brought to the attention of the masses by foodie Hugh-Fearnley Whittingstall who moved here and set up his ‘River Cottage’ empire as a spin-off from the successful Channel 4 television show of the same name. In addition to this, if the name seems familiar to you, it is because it has been the home of the world-famous Axminster carpet. Axminster Carpets have been synonymous with carpet luxury and craftsmanship for over 250 years. They are Britain’s oldest, best known and most prestigious carpet designer and manufacturer whose high quality carpets can be found in royal palaces, the best hotels, sports stadiums and private houses. This national treasure was saved from administration in 2020 and their carpets are still manufactured in the town where at one time the bells of the minster reportedly pealed each time a carpet was finished.

If you’re thinking of moving to this area to commute then you’ll probably be pleased to hear that Axminster has excellent rail and travel links. However, the main road becomes very congested during the summer months as visitors head to the coast via the town centre. Despite being a busy thoroughfare during peak times, the town itself retains many of its period features and is steeped in history and tradition. The Axminster Heritage Centre explores the town’s industrial past whilst nearby Lyme Regis Museum features many exhibits by Axminster native and noted local geologist and palaeontologist, William Buckland.
