Have you ever been on holiday and wanted to stay forever? That’s what the Daily Mail’s Shona Sibary did. She said it was the biggest mistake of her life and that it broke up her family! To be honest she looks like she’s be pretty miserable anywhere – and she didn’t move to Dorset, she moved to Devon – but if you’re thinking of moving to the country or the coast – somewhere like West Bay in Dorset  – after a life in the city, you do need to be prepared for a different pace of life!

The Broadchurch Effect

One area of Dorset which has been receiving renewed interest from holidaymakers and TV enthusiasts alike is West Bay. This rise in popularity has been brought on by it’s beautiful sweeping coastline and towering sandstone cliffs being featured heavily in all three series of popular ITV detective drama Broadchurch. The fact that someone died in the fictional town doesn’t seem to have put anyone off and visitors have been flocking to the coast to check out the filming locations ever since the first series aired in early 2013. Some of these visitors have decided to stay – causing a little bit of an uplift in the local housing market – but according to the locals there are still some lovely properties available here for a fraction of the cost of anything on the South Coast nearer to London.

Lets talk about the Weather

One of the things that Shona Sibaty noticed about Devon is that it rains a lot off season. It rains in West Bay and Dorset too – but never in Broadchurch – so if you’re thinking of making the move, then you need to be prepared for that. And also be prepared for the quite times and the influx of visitors during the summer season. Situated on Dorset’s Jurassic Coast, there isn’t an awful lot going on by the sea when it’s raining – but West Bay is just 2 Miles away from the sophisticated town of Bridport (where Northover and Gilbert are based) and it’s thriving arts scene. There are lots of interesting things going on in Bridport all year round and it has been described by some as Notting Hill by the Sea (but really it’s much better than that).

House prices in West Bay

The majority of properties sold in West Bay during the last year were flats, selling for an average price of £232,250. Detached properties sold for an average of £348,000, with semi-detached properties fetching around £294,000.

West Bay, with an overall average price of £285,000 is more expensive than nearby Bridport (£258,800), but cheaper than Burton Bradstock which has larger village properties fro sale (£468,210) and Charmouth (£321,925).

If you’re thinking of renting in the West Bay area then a 2 bedroom apartment will set you back about £550, rising to around £800 for a three-bedroomed cottage.

And what if you wanted to buy a piece of TV history? David Tennant’s Moody detective character Alec Hardy’s 2 bedroom chalet sold a couple of years ago for £250,000!
